POLYMAT at the University of the Basque Country is an internationally reputed research institute in Polymer Science. Directed by Prof. J.R. Leiza, POLYMAT includes 21 Assistant, Associate and Full Professors and more than 50 PhD students
and postdoctoral fellows. The Institute is organised in four areas: Polymer Science, Polymerisation Processes, Rheology and Polymer Processing and has provided technical support to more than 100 companies, both SMEs and large companies. POLYMAT was recently recognised as a BERC (Basque Excellency Research
Centre) to launch new research lines in polymers for health, energy and sustainability.
The Innovative Polymers Group (http://www.polymat.eu/es/groups/innovative-polymersgroup) heading by Dr. David Mecerreyes, is specialised in polymer chemistry. The final goal is to synthesize innovative polymeric materials for Emerging Technologies in sectors such as Energy and Bioelectronics. The group is currently formed by 12 researchers including 3 post-docs, 1 project manager and 8 PhD students of different nationalities.

Key people involved I:  Dr. David Mecerreyes

David Mecerreyes carried out his PhD at the Université de Liege. He did a 2 year post-doc at IBM Almaden Research Centre at California. After his post-doctoral stay, he returned to Spain to join CIDETEC-IK4, Centre for Electrochemical Technologies. In 2011, he moved to an Ikerbasque Research Professor position at the University of the Basque Country where he has created his own research group. He is a young researcher with more than 150 articles, 6 international patents. He is currently participating in the ITN OLIMPIA (www.olimpiaproject.eu) in the field of Neuro-Organic-Optoelectronics.

Key people involved II:  Dr. Haritz Sardon

Dr. Haritz Sardon Muguruza earned his PhD from the University of Basque Country with the especial mention of “Doctor Europeus”. Afterwards he moved to the industry, to Histocell where he developed innovative biomaterials for tissue regeneration. Subsequently he did a 2 year post-doc at IBM Almaden Research Centre at California. After his post-doctoral stay, hereturned to Spain to join POLYMAT. He has more than 20 articles and 2 international patents.
